“In the year 1925 Joseph Roy is believed to have observed in some conditions of a culture the existence of a germ animated by an oscillating movement. He named the nosode oscillococcinum because of this fact.

These researches helped him to describe a remedy of which the clinical experiments in the infections of influenza were carried out in particular by Paul Chavanon. Oscillococcinum was developed by boron laboratory in France. Pierre Schmidt says Oscillococcinum is for “influenza at the beginning as a preventive, as well as during convalescence.”

Influenza of all types, especially in the earlier stages. Bursting headaches and muscle aching. Tendency to get influenza. Anxiety, paleness, chill. Sensitiveness to barometric weather changes. Tuberculous patients sensitive to cold. Paleness, asthenia, hyperthermia. Eye and nasal catarrh. Bronchial congestion. Painful congestion of the ear drum. Gastro-intestinal troubles with the influenza.

This is a faithful remedy at the beginning of influenza, of rhinitis and otitis. Given early it is very efficacious.

To obtain good results in a case which begins and to cut short the manifestations of influenza, it is necessary to use one dose of Oscillococcinum 200c every 2-3 hours or repeat only if necessary.

Modalities——Better by heat. Better by rest. Worse by milk. Worse by eggs.”

My 2 cents. This homeopathic remedy works very well. To be effective it must be used in the beginning of the symptoms. As soon as the slight scratchy throat, body ache, sneezing, dripping nose, tiredness, chills, fever, headache begins start the Oscillococcinum immediately.

The remedy comes in little tubes, filled with small white pills. There are 12 tubes in a box. The manufacturer suggests dissolving the entire contents of one tube in the mouth every 6 hours up to 3 times a day. This remedy is sold in the 200 potency. This potency is fairly strong. It is not necessary to take an entire tube as a dose. Just take 10-20 of the small pills. Let dissolve under the tongue. In this way a tube and box will last much longer. Taking an entire tube is not necessary as a few pills will work just fine. Take a dose every 2-3 hours for the first 24 hours. If after one or two doses there is improvement then do not take another dose until the improvement is lost.

My experience is that this medicine works really well but only if it is started within the first 24 hours of the symptoms showing up. If the remedy is started after 24 hours it is not very effective at all. After 24 hours another homeopathic medicine will be much more effective. This can be discussed at another time. Influenza is also called FLU.

For those of you that are interested Oscillococcinum may also be used as a prophylactic for the flu. At the beginning of the flu season take a dose of Oscillococcinum once per day. Do this 3 days in a row. Repeat once per month for the duration of the season of flu.
